A macro is keyword surrounded by curly braces that you can put in a page to produce some behavior. It can also be passed parameters.

A plugin consists in Java classes installed in your Servlet container.

An Application is a set of documents packaged together. Applications can be installed using the Import wizard.

A skin provides a look & feel for everything you see in the wiki.

An extension is an application or script that integrates or interacts with XWiki. In other word it's anything that doesn't fit in any other category ;)
